Summer Camp 2010 @ Camp Pioneer

We arrived in Camp Pioneer on Saturday July 17. We got settled and enjoyed a quiet day in camp before Church on Sunday in Sisters, Oregon and the afternoon Camp Orientation. This was followed by lots of merit badges and lots of fun activities. These are just a few of the pictures from boys in the middle of the action:

Upcoming Fathers & Sons Campout

All of the fathers and sons of all ages in the troop (and ward) are welcome and encouraged to come out to this outing. We will be staying in a camp-site on a bluff just above the beach, and will have a short 3 min walk to the beach, just south of Cape Lookout. We will be in Camp Clark (directly adjacent to Camp Meriwether) in the Rogue Siuslaw, and Necanium campsites. you can get a map of Camp Clark and our campsites here

Boys need to get to camp with their fathers, or with friends if their father cannot attend. You can get directions to the campsite by clicking here. There will be no official BSA leader to transport the boys (though several BSA leaders will be there with their own sons of all ages.) Fathers are encouraged to bring their sons, cooking together. There will be Saturday pancake breakfast provided by the ward, so you don't have to bring anything for breakfast. There are no planned or coordinated Saturday activities, and boys will return home with fathers, or friends with whom they attended anytime they want on Saturday.

There is a great 4.8 mile out-n-back hike to the tip of Cape Lookout. You can get directions and information on that hike by clicking here. There will also be some of the lowest minus tides of the year on Saturday morning (low tide is 1.3 feet below sea level at 9:04 am), and boys may wish to visit local tide pools just minutes from camp, or nearby Netart's Bay for some easy clamming (click here for clamming info).

There will also be some other organized morning activities, with a proposed tug-of-war, beach football, and some sand-castle building.

You are free to come and go as you please, though we need to have tents and gear out of camp by 2pm on Saturday. You are welcome to stay and use the beach or camp facilities all day if you'd like. If you take any good pictures, please email them to Bro. Davis for inclusion on the blog!

Wapiti District Camporee

We met at the church at 6pm on Friday, and left as soon as everyone was there. Most of the eleven year old scouts also attended.

We drove to Willamette Mission State Park, got set up and had dinner. The park is just Southwest of Woodburn, and is basically a large grassy filbert orchard. We had some free time to play to visit with other scouts in the evening, and a fireside discussion.

In the morning, we started with a flag ceremony, followed by an all day activities. We went in groups to all these stations where there were challenges we had to complete using basic scouting skills. A bunch of us also got to do some geocaching with Bro. Anderson's phone, and found 4 geocaches right there in the park! We had lots of fun.

We'll broke for lunch, and did a service project in the afternoon. We had some more afternoon activities, and ended up coming home just after dinner. What a great trip! Pictures to be added soon!

Nanitch Lodge Snow Trip

We repeated our annual trip up to Nanitch Lodge on Mt. Hood. There was lots of sledding on good snow, and great food.

Fort Stevens Yurt Camp-out

Problems with reservations at Beverly Beach forced us to change our plans slightly. After the regular meeting at the church, and long drive, we headed out to Fort Stevens State Park in Warrenton, OR. This is the Northwestern-most point of Oregon, at the junction of the Oregon Coast and the Columbia River.

All 10 boys slept in a Yurt. A yurt is a canvas walled cabin, with bunk beds and a heater, and electricity. A couple of the boys had to sleep on the floor, but it wasn't too bad. There was a little too much talking and the boys stayed up later than they should have.

On Saturday morning, we drove out to visit the sunken ship on the beach at Fort Stevens, and visit the remains of the original fort. We visited the military museum as well. They had some great old photos and loads of memorabilia. the boys seemed to enjoy most running all around the old fort and exploring the many empty rooms.

We then headed out to the South Jetty and let the boys scramble on the rocks and walk out the Jetty. (It extends out into the Columbia River / Ocean for about a mile.) We only made it about 400 meters out, but saw some huge waves. We tried to cast out a crab-catcher, but the waves were so big it got lost on the first cast. We rounded out the trip with a jaunt over to the Astoria Tower, looming over the Columbia river. The boys were exhausted, and everyone had a really fun trip.
