June 2015 Campout - Fishing at Small Fry Pond (Estacada, OR)

This month, we were working on the fishing Merit Badge. On Friday, we drove just South of Estacada, and set up camp at Lockaby Campground, just off Clackamas Highway. It was in the 90's and sunny, so we were all pretty hot from setting up camp and decided to cool off with a swim in the river which was just below camp.

The Water in the river was pretty cold. Some of the boys realized that the stagnant ponds had much warmer water, and used it to warm up a tad. Let's just say they didn't smell so great afterwards.

After we'd cooled down, we headed back to Promontory Park, which was about a 15 minute drive down the road. The park itself was closed, but we got permission from a park ranger "because we were boy scouts" to go fishing in the stocked pond there. We walked down to Small Fry Pond, which is a tiny lake, maybe 150ft long and 50 feet across. It was just big enough for the boys we had fishing.

After a great afternoon of fishing with all of the boys catching fish, we headed back to camp. The boys swam and fished in the Clackamas River, and then cooked their fish up for dinner. The pan fried trout was delicious.

Bishop Jaussi even jumped into the river with his son.

On Saturday, we played and fished in the river next to our campground again. Some of the boys even tried to combine fishing and swimming.

Bishop Jaussi showed us a thing or two about catching rocks fish.

Jack caught the last (and by far, largest) fish of the day. a 15 inch catfish.
