What to bring camping?

Many parents have questions on what their scout needs to be prepared for a campout.  Here is a list to help get you started:

First, you should have the 10 Essentials.

Other Items
Backpack with rain cover
Tent, poles, pegs, groundsheet
Sleeping bag
Sleeping pad
Day pack

Cooking Items
Food
Mess kit (skillet, kettle, plate, cup, and cutlery)
Biodegradable Liquid Soap (Camp Soap)
Pot scrubber

Clothing Items
Hiking shoes
Underwear
Socks, inner and/or outer
Shirts (long-sleeve and short-sleeve)

Nanitch Lodge/ Winter Items (bring extras if possible.  It's nice to have more gloves etc.)
Base layer (thermal underwear, non-cotton)
Mid-layer (non-cotton sweat pants and fleece jacket)
Snow pants
Snow Jacket (water proof)
Cold-weather hat (covers ears)
Warm and waterproof gloves
An EXTRA Sleeping bag (put one inside the other for added warmth)
Sleeping Mat/ Air Mattress
Hand warmers
Snow Boots

Before you drop your scout off for a campout, here are some questions I would ask them:
1. Did you bring your sleeping bag?
2. Did you bring a sleeping pad?
3. Do you have a tent to sleep in? If answer is yes, ask whose tent.
4. What are the temperatures going to be during the day/night? Do you think you brought enough stuff to stay warm/cool/dry?
5. Do you have a pocketknife?
6. Do you have a first aid kit?
7. Do you have extra clothing?
8. Do you have a flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries?
9. Do you have rain gear?
10. Do you have your water bottle?
11. Do you have a compass?
12. Do you have matches and fire starter?
13. Do you have your mess kit?
14. Do you have your food?
15. Do you have everything you need to cook and eat your food and then clean up your dishes?  (For example, if they bring a can, they need a can opener etc.)
